The concept of community is doing things together and helping one another in the spirit of goodwill. Another term would be corporate social responsibility (CSR). It means giving back to the community in which we operate. In this section, we present some community projects which would appreciate your support:
Fujian (Xiamen)-Singapore Friendship Polyclinic
The Fujian Chapter of the Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China is raising funds for a healthcare polyclinic in Xiamen.
Significance
The polyclinic will be the first such project in China modelled after Singapore’s government-run polyclinic system. The polyclinic is the first community project funded by the Singaporean community and the Xiamen government.
The Xiamen facility will have 30 consultation rooms and the capacity to treat 500 patients a day. It is hoped that the project will contribute to healthcare reforms in China and be replicated throughout Fujian Province.
Progress
The ground-breaking ceremony for the Fujian(Xiamen)-Singapore Friendship Polyclinic was held on 19 May 2009. VIPs who officiated at the event included Singapore Ambassador to China BG (Ret) Chin Siat Yoon [second from the left in picture] and Xiamen Vice Mayor Mr Pan Shijian [third from the left].
Funding
To date, the project has received funds and funding commitments totalling more than S$1 million or RMB5 million (The target is to raise at least S$3 million).
The Xiamen government, which has provided the plot of land for the polyclinic, will match the funds raised by the Singaporean community for the project.
